Free PDF Splitter Online

Extract pages, page ranges, or split every page into its own file. Runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

Your PDF never leaves this device. Splitting uses pdf-lib inside your browser — open DevTools, watch the Network tab, and you will see zero requests.

A client sent me a 140-page contract last year. I needed pages 12 through 18 — the pricing appendix — to forward to my accountant. Opening the whole thing in Adobe Acrobat, selecting "Organize Pages," extracting seven pages, and saving a new file took me longer than reading the actual appendix. Acrobat charges $12.99/month for this privilege.

Smallpdf does it for free, five times. Then it asks for $9/month. iLovePDF is similar — free tier with limits, $4/month for unlimited. Both upload the entire PDF to their servers, split it remotely, and let you download the result.

For a pricing appendix that is probably fine. For a medical report, a tax return, or a signed NDA, uploading it to someone else's server is a decision I'd rather skip. This tool skips it — the PDF never leaves your browser.

Three Ways to Split a PDF

Page Range

Type "12-18" and get a single PDF containing those seven pages. Mix ranges and single pages: "1, 5-8, 12" produces one PDF with six pages in that order. This is the fastest mode when you know which pages you need.

Pick Pages

A grid of numbered tiles, one per page. Click to select, click again to deselect. Useful when you need scattered pages from a large document and don't want to count page numbers. "Select all" and then deselect what you don't want works too.

Every Page

One click, one PDF per page. A 30-page document becomes 30 files. Useful when you need to email individual pages to different people, or when each page is a standalone form, certificate, or receipt.

When You Actually Need This

Nobody splits PDFs for fun. Here are the situations that come up most:

Extracting a Section from a Long Document

Contracts, reports, manuals. You need pages 45-52 out of a 200-page PDF. Forwarding the whole thing wastes the recipient's time and may expose content they shouldn't see.

Upload Portals with Page Limits

Government and insurance forms often require single-page PDFs: "Upload page 1 of your bank statement." Page range "1" gives you exactly that in one second.

Removing Pages Before Sharing

A PDF has ten pages but page 7 has internal comments you don't want the client to see. Extract "1-6, 8-10" and the sensitive page never leaves your machine.

Breaking Up Scanned Documents

Office scanners dump everything into one file. You scanned five receipts and they landed as a single five-page PDF. "Every page" mode gives you five individual files to attach to five separate expense claims.

How This Compares

Prices checked September 2026. All three competitors upload the file to their servers.

The honest gap is page previews. Smallpdf and iLovePDF render thumbnail images of each page because their server does it. Rendering PDF pages in the browser requires a large library (pdfjs-dist, about 400KB) that we have not added yet. You get numbered tiles instead, which is fast and functional but not as visual. If you need to visually identify the right page, open the PDF in your normal viewer first, note the page numbers, and type them here.

10 Things Worth Knowing About Splitting PDFs

  1. Page numbering in PDFs can lie. Some documents start at "page 3" because the first two pages are a cover and table of contents. This tool uses physical page order, not the printed numbers. Page 1 here is always the first sheet in the file.
  2. Splitting does not compress. A 50MB PDF split into 10 pages gives you files that add up to roughly 50MB. Each page keeps its embedded images and fonts at full size.
  3. Fonts are embedded per page. If the original PDF embeds a font, every extracted page that uses it gets a copy. This is correct behaviour — the output opens on any machine without missing fonts.
  4. Annotations survive. Highlights, sticky notes, and form fields on an extracted page stay in the new file.
  5. Hyperlinks to other pages may break. If page 5 has a link to page 20 and you only extract pages 1-10, that link has nowhere to go. The link element remains but does nothing.
  6. Bookmarks are document-level. A split file loses the table of contents from the original. That is expected — the bookmark tree belongs to the full document.
  7. Encrypted PDFs need to be unlocked first. Owner-password PDFs (editing restricted) usually work. User-password PDFs (can't open without a password) do not — the tool cannot read the bytes.
  8. The output file name includes the page range. "contract-pages-12-to-18.pdf" rather than "output.pdf". Saves you renaming it later.
  9. There is no undo, but also no risk. The original file is never modified. You are always working on a copy.
  10. For merging, you need a different tool. Split and merge are inverse operations. This tool only splits. A merge tool is on the roadmap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?

No. The entire split operation runs in your browser using pdf-lib, a JavaScript library that manipulates PDF bytes directly. Open DevTools, watch the Network tab, and split a file — you will see zero requests carrying your document. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tool still works.

Is there a page limit or file size limit?

There is no hard limit. Since your device does the work, the practical ceiling is your available RAM. A 200-page, 50MB PDF works fine on most laptops. If a file is extremely large and your browser runs out of memory, you will see a clear error — nothing crashes silently.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

Only if the PDF uses an owner password (which restricts editing but allows opening). If the file requires a user password just to open it, the tool cannot read the bytes and will show an error. Remove the password first with your PDF viewer's 'Print to PDF' trick, then split here.

Does splitting remove bookmarks or links?

Each extracted page keeps its own content, annotations, and form fields. Document-level bookmarks that point to pages outside the extracted range will no longer work in the output file, which is expected — the target page is not in the new document.

Can I rearrange pages before splitting?

Not yet. This tool extracts pages in the order they appear in the original. If you need to reorder, extract the pages you want, then use a PDF merge tool to combine them in a new order.

How many files can I produce in one go?

As many as there are pages. If you use the 'Every page as a separate PDF' mode on a 50-page document, you get 50 files. The download button triggers them one at a time with a small delay so your browser does not block them.
